Aluminium

Aluminium Info
Background

http://www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=2863

Background
Physically, chemically and mechanically aluminium is a metal like steel, brass, copper, zinc, lead or titanium. It can be melted, cast, formed and machined much like these metals and it conducts electric current. In fact often the same equipment and fabrication methods are used as for steel.
Light Weight
Aluminium is a very light metal with a specific weight of 2.7 g/cm3, about a third that of steel. For example, the use of aluminium in vehicles reduces dead-weight and energy consumption while increasing load capacity. Its strength can be adapted to the application required by modifying the composition of its alloys.
Corrosion Resistance
Aluminium naturally generates a protective oxide coating and is highly corrosion resistant. Different types of surface treatment such as anodising, painting or lacquering can further improve this property. It is particularly useful for applications where protection and conservation are required.
Electrical and Thermal Conductivity
Aluminium is an excellent heat and electricity conductor and in relation to its weight is almost twice as good a conductor as copper. This has made aluminium the most commonly used material in major power transmission lines.
Reflectivity
Aluminium is a good reflector of visible light as well as heat, and that together with its low weight, makes it an ideal material for reflectors in, for example, light fittings or rescue blankets.
Ductility
Aluminium is ductile and has a low melting point and density. In a molten condition it can be processed in a number of ways. Its ductility allows products of aluminium to be basically formed close to the end of the product’s design.
Impermeable and Odourless
Aluminium foil, even when it is rolled to only 0.007 mm thickness, is still completely impermeable and lets neither light aroma nor taste substances out. Moreover, the metal itself is non-toxic and releases no aroma or taste substances which makes it ideal for packaging sensitive products such as food or pharmaceuticals.
Recyclability
Aluminium is 100 percent recyclable with no downgrading of its qualities. The re-melting of aluminium requires little energy: only about 5 percent of the energy required to produce the primary metal initially is needed in the recycling process.

ABS

ABS - Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene Plastic

INTRODUCTION
ABS is an ideal material wherever superlative surface quality, colorfastness and luster are required. ABS is a two phase polymer blend. A continuous phase of styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) gives the materials rigidity, hardness and heat resistance. The toughness of ABS is the result of submicroscopically fine polybutadiene rubber particles uniformly distributed in the SAN matrix.

GRADES AVAILABLE
ABS sandard grades have been developed specifically to meet the requirements of major customers. ABS is readily modified both by the addition of additives and by variation of the ratio of the three monomers Acrylonitrile, Butadiene and Styrene: hence grades available include high and medium impact, high heat resistance, and electroplatable. Fibre reinforcement can be incorporated to increase stiffness and dimensional stability. ABS is readily blended or alloyed with other polymers further increasing the range of properties available. Fire retardancy may be obtained either by the inclusion of fire retardant additives or by blending with PVC. The natural material is an opaque ivory colour and is readily coloured with pigments or dyes. Transparent grades are also available.
A variety of grades are available for different applications, the material is typically injection moulded or extruded.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Tensile Strength 40-50

Notched Impact Strength 10 - 20

Thermal Coefficient of expansion 70 - 90
Max Cont Use Temp 80 - 95
Density 1.0 - 1.05 g/cm3

History of ABS
Styrene Acrylonitrile copolymers have been available since the 1940’s and while its increased toughness over styrene made it suitable for many applications, its limitations led to the introduction of a rubber (butadiene) as a third monomer and hence was born the range of materials popularly referred to as ABS plastics. These became available in the 1950’s and the variability of these copolymers and ease of processing has led to ABS becoming the most popular of the engineering polymers.
Terluran® is the ABS from BASF : special Terluran® grades and Terluran® Standard are ideal materials wherever superlative surface quality, colorfastness and luster are required. Terluran’s properties are superior to those generally expected from an ABS, even where comparable products require costly modification. Terluran® is an extremely cost-effective material for components with stringent service requirements, or where there is weight-saving potential.

Acrylic

Advantages of Acrylic
Ease of FabricationWhen Acrylic is heated to its forming temperature (approximately 325ºF) it becomes soft and pliable and can be formed into a variety of shapes. As the material cools in its formed state, it solidifies and holds the shape to which it has been formed. Because the material is formed at low pressure, molds can be made from plastic and low-cost wood. Acrylic can also be machined, drilled and sawed like wood or soft metals.
Excellent Electrical PropertiesAcrylic has certain unmatched electrical properties which are affected slightly by weathering or moisture. Its surface resistivity is higher than most plastic materials and its power factor decreases with increased frequency.
LightweightAcrylic is less than 50% as heavy as glass, is 43% as heavy as aluminum and 70% as heavy as magnesium.
· Impact ResistantAlthough it weighs less than half as much as glass, Acrylic has from 6 to 17 times greater impact resistance than ordinary glass in thicknesses of .125" to .250"
· Weather ResistantAcrylic sheet withstands weather and sun exposure with almost no loss of light transmittance, clarity and strength in over a quarter century of usage.

week 3 term2 08

On Tuesday we did our materials research.I did ABS plastic Aluminium and Acrylic plastic . I have also done some stuff on my slim light design and have decided that it will be wall mounted because it will spead more light that way.Today we are updating blogger and our calender. On friday we are doing a 2 hour practical i will most likely be folding by box and making brackets for my aluminium box.

constraints

CONSTAINTS How to solve this
Rust proof use rustproof materials eg. Alominiun Plastics etc.
weather proof Seal it so no water may get through Make it Sturdy
self powered Use Solar Panel
$60 Budget Buy components from Jay car and circuitronics
On at night off at day put in LDR

Breif - Dr Tony House

Hi I am Dr Tony House Im your client i wants a self powered light that is outdoor in the corramandel beach.the purpose of the light is to light up poacita beach grass.the light must be able to withstand the corramandel weather so it must be rustproof and weather proof.it must turn off at day and automatically on at night.it must be under 500mm in size. It must be under $60.

Good Luck My Young Apprentice...

Week 2 term 2 08 friday 11DTM

We have taken apart a a solar ligt tha t were from the warehouse . After we took the solar light apart we listed all the components that wer in it and wrote what material they were made of.We also listed what the components did. i finished that on wednesday.i also have helped some people that were a bit behind with there circuits.today we are doing blogging and next period we are most likely doing practical that will be great. :) =D
